Bscs

The research of the Department of Biomedical Sciences of Cells & Systems (BSCS) of the UMC Groningen focuses on understanding basic functions and processes of the cell & organs and how these lead to diseases when disturbed. The department strives to identify and, if possible, exploit goals to prevent or cure diseases and to promote Healthy Ageing. The function is part of a project that is being realized within the UMIC (see below).

UMIC
The UMCG Microscopy and Imaging Center is part of the BSCS, where not only common techniques are applied, but also techniques pioneered in the laboratory of dr. Giepmans are made available to many here. For example, advanced microscopic techniques are applied to help understand how molecular mechanisms lead to disease, with a focus on the malfunction of the islets of Langerhans in type 1 diabetes. In the current project, the aim is to use ‘nanotomy’ tissues and cells to map in a ‘Google-earth’ like way in the context of T1D and other diseases, with a resolution so that macromolecules can be seen. In particular, the analyst function will focus on (i) sample preparation for 2D and 3D electron microscopy; (ii) acquisition of large surfaces (up to 1 mm2); (iii) data management of microscopy in the UMIC. In addition, 1 of the analysts will mainly train or assist others in the use of the microscopes and supervise the data streams.
