Inspiring visit by Martijn Meijwaard to the MS Center Northern Netherlands

Sometimes you have those days: then everything comes together and you remember why your work is so special. Thursday, April 7 was one such day. Martijn Meijwaard came to Groningen with a check for the MS Center North Netherlands.

Martijn was diagnosed with MS 4 years ago and underwent a stem cell transplant in Moscow more than 2 years ago. As he described it beautifully himself: my wheelchair is now collecting dust in the attic and I can already walk 3 km! He started a crowdfunding for his treatment and his travel and accommodation costs and he raised so much money in a short time that there was still more than 18,000 euros left. He donated that money to the myelin research that takes place at the MS Center North Netherlands. His motivation: this way I help everyone with MS. Kirstin Heutinck, interim director of the MS Research Foundation, was also present and was also impressed by Martijn’s story and gesture. The money, but especially his personal story was inspiring for the researchers at MSCNN. As one of the students described it so beautifully: ‘just take your nose out of the petri dish; you now know what you’re doing it for!
