Teaching from Bench to Bedside – A bachelor course at the crossroads of research, care and patient involvement (Muriel Mari & Mario Mauthe)

What kind of knowledge does a bachelor student in medicine need to become the best possible practitioner? A solid theoretical basis on diagnostics and treatments of major diseases? Practical experiences through care internships? Yes to both, but equally important is the knowledge about how diseases develop, what kind of effect they have on a molecular level, and whether better fundamental understanding can improve treatment and diagnostics.

A molecular medicine course with a little extra

At the department of Biomedical Sciences of Cells and Systems of the University Medical Center Groningen, they offer a molecular medicine course that has just this little extra. “With this course, we want to teach the students about the pathology of a disease, but also about current diagnostics and treatments. We want to show them the perspective from the research side, how the bench helps the bedside. For an ideal outcome, you need both perspectives,” says the supervisor, Assistant Professor Dr. Muriel Mari.
